Stonehenge is one of the most recognisable prehistoric monuments in the world. Located on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, the great stone circle has fascinated visitors for centuries and remains one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe.

Stonehenge was built in several stages between about 3000 BC and 2000 BC during the Neolithic and early Bronze Age.

The earliest phase of the monument consisted of a circular earthwork enclosure with a ditch and bank.

Later builders erected the massive sarsen stones that form the famous outer circle and inner trilithons.

Some of these sarsen stones weigh up to 25 tonnes and were transported from the Marlborough Downs about 30 kilometres away.

Many of the smaller bluestones came from the Preseli Hills in west Wales, over 200 kilometres from the site.

The stones are arranged with remarkable precision and align with the movements of the sun.

Archaeology has shown that Stonehenge was part of a much larger ceremonial landscape including Durrington Walls and Woodhenge.

Today the monument is protected as part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage Site.
