Brú na Bóinne Visitors Centre
The Brú na Bóinne Visitors Centre located near the village of Donore, Co. Meath, is the official starting point for guided tours of Newgrange and Knowth. If you are planning to visit either monument, you must begin here, as access to the monuments is managed through the visitor centre and shuttle system. The centre sits on the south bank of the River Boyne, within the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage landscape, one of Europe’s most significant prehistoric areas.
A distinctive feature outside the building is the water feature with its large oval stones. These are 330 million year old naturally occurring concretions, discovered on the site during construction. They are a striking reminder that the valley’s story includes deep geological time as well as human history.
How Visits Work
The Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre acts as the orientation point for the monuments. After checking in and experiencing the exhibition, visitors cross the pedestrian bridge and continue to the shuttle coach departure area. Newgrange and Knowth are both located north of the river, and visitors are brought to them by shuttle bus. It is about a 5 minute walk from the Visitor Centre to the shuttle bus pick up point.
Book Tickets for the Brú na Bóinne Tour (Newgrange and Knowth).
Even if you can see the monuments in the landscape, you cannot drive directly to them for public admission. The shuttle arrangement protects the setting of the monuments and helps manage visitor numbers on a very busy site. Pre booking is essential, while pre booking for the visitor centre exhibition alone is not required.
The Exhibition and Replica Chamber
Inside the visitor centre you will find an interpretive exhibition focused on Neolithic life, monument building and the wider ceremonial landscape. A key feature is the reconstructed chamber experience, which helps visitors understand the scale and atmosphere of a passage tomb interior before travelling to the monuments themselves. Displays also introduce the remarkable tradition of megalithic art, which is especially abundant at Knowth, and the engineering behind the great mounds and kerbs.
Brú na Bóinne Visitors Centre sensitively blended into the landscape on the banks of the River Boyne
The building was designed to sit low in the valley and blend into the landscape, helping to preserve long distance views across the Boyne. From the grounds you get a strong sense of the river bend and the ridgelines that frame the World Heritage area.
Facilities
Facilities typically include toilets, a shop and refreshments, along with a large car park. If you arrive early, you will have extra time to enjoy the exhibition and the setting before your shuttle departure.
